The fear of man
The fear of man is a common affliction that affects many individuals. It is a fear of what others may think, say or do in response to our actions or decisions. This fear can be paralyzing, causing individuals to compromise their values and morals or to avoid taking necessary risks or making important decisions. The Bible warns us about the dangers of the fear of man, and offers us an alternative – the fear of God.
Proverbs 29:25 says, “The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.” This verse highlights the consequences of the fear of man – it brings a snare. This means that it traps us, holding us captive to the opinions and expectations of others. The fear of man can lead us to compromise our values, to seek approval from others instead of God, and to avoid doing what we know is right.
In contrast, the verse also offers us a solution – to put our trust in the Lord. When we fear God, we have a healthy respect for His commands and seek to please Him above all else. We recognize that God alone is our ultimate judge and that His approval is more important than the approval of anyone else. Psalms 118:8 says, “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.” This verse emphasizes the superiority of God’s evaluation of us over man’s evaluation.
Throughout the Bible, we see examples of individuals who fear God more than man. In Exodus 1, the midwives feared God and refused to obey the king’s command to kill the male Hebrew babies. Their fear of God led them to make the right choice, even though it meant going against the ruler’s orders. In Daniel 3, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow down to a statue that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up, even though they faced persecution. Their fear of God overruled their fear of man.
In conclusion, the fear of man is a dangerous trap that can lead us astray from what is right. We must recognize the importance of fearing God above all else and putting our trust in Him. When we fear God, we seek His approval and His will, and we can trust that He will guide us in the right direction. As Ecclesiastes 12:13 says, “Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”
