The value of community
As humans, we were created for community. We thrive on connection, support, and encouragement from those around us. In fact, God’s design for humanity included a strong emphasis on relationships and community. This is evident in the Bible, where we see numerous examples of people coming together in fellowship, worship, and service.
One powerful passage that speaks to the value of community is found in Hebrews 10:24-25, which says:
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
This passage highlights the importance of gathering together regularly with fellow believers. It encourages us to use our time together to encourage and support one another in our walk with Christ, and to motivate each other to love and serve others.
But Hebrews 10:24-25 is not the only passage in the Bible that speaks to the value of community. In fact, throughout the Bible, we see numerous examples of people coming together in fellowship, worship, and service. Here are just a few examples:
1. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 – “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
This passage emphasizes the importance of having a support system in life. It reminds us that we are stronger together than we are alone, and that we need each other to overcome life’s challenges.
2. Acts 2:42-47 – “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer… All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.”

This passage describes the early church and the close-knit community they formed. They were devoted to each other and to God, and they shared everything they had with one another. They spent time together in worship, prayer, and fellowship, and their love for each other was evident to everyone around them.
3. Romans 12:4-5 – “For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”
This passage compares the body of Christ to a physical body, with each believer being a unique part of the whole. It reminds us that we need each other to function properly, and that we are all connected through our relationship with Christ.
These passages, along with many others, emphasize the importance of community in the life of a believer. We were not meant to walk through life alone, but rather to journey together with fellow believers, supporting, encouraging, and challenging one another as we grow in our faith. So let us heed the words of Hebrews 10:24-25
and make it a priority to gather regularly with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Let us use these times to spur one another on towards love and good deeds, to encourage one another in our walk with Christ, and to strengthen our bonds of fellowship.
In addition to gathering together as a community, we can also seek out smaller groups of believers for more intimate fellowship and support. This can include participating in a small group Bible study, joining a prayer group, or finding a mentor or accountability partner.
As we come together in community, we are able to experience the love and grace of God in a powerful way. We are reminded that we are not alone in our struggles, and that we have a family of believers to walk alongside us in our journey of faith. Let us, therefore, value and prioritize the community of believers that God has placed in our lives, and let us continue to spur one another on towards love and good deeds.

So let us heed the words of Hebrews 10:24-25 and other passages that speak to the value of community, and let us make it a priority to gather regularly with our brothers and sisters in Christ.
