The Joy of giving
The Bible encourages us to give generously and cheerfully. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, Paul writes, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” Let’s take a look at some other Bible verses that support the joy of giving:

- Proverbs 11:25 – “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” We are blessed when we bless others.
- Luke 6:38 – “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” When we give to others, we can trust God to provide for us.
- Acts 20:35 – “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” Jesus himself taught us the joy of giving.
- 1 Timothy 6:17-19 – “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” We can use our resources to bless others and store up treasures in heaven.
- Hebrews 13:16 – “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” Giving to others pleases God and demonstrates our love for Him.
As we can see from these verses, giving can bring joy and blessings both to the giver and the receiver. So, let us be cheerful givers and trust God to provide for our needs as we bless others.
- 2 Corinthians 8:2-3 – “In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own,” This verse shows that even in difficult circumstances, we can experience joy through giving.
- Matthew 25:35-40 – “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” When we give to those in need, we are serving Jesus Himself.
- Galatians 6:9-10 – “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” We should not lose heart in doing good, but continue to give generously and joyfully.
- Malachi 3:10 – “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.” God promises to bless us when we give generously to His work.
- 1 John 3:17-18 – “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” Our love for God should be demonstrated through our actions, including giving to those in need.
